Your computer is the backbone of any color grading workflow. Most people think any decent laptop will work, but that's where problems start. Color grading pushes hardware harder than most video editing tasks.

The CPU needs to handle real-time processing while the GPU manages color space conversions. We've seen students struggle with 8GB RAM systems that simply can't cache enough footage for smooth playback.

Graphics cards matter more than many realize. A dedicated GPU with at least 4GB VRAM becomes essential when working with 4K footage or complex node trees. Integrated graphics will leave you waiting for renders instead of focusing on creative decisions.

Monitor Calibration Reality

This is where beginners often make expensive mistakes. You don't need a $3000 reference monitor to start learning, but you do need something that shows accurate colors.

A properly calibrated IPS monitor around $400-600 beats an expensive uncalibrated display every time. We recommend starting with hardware calibration tools rather than software-only solutions.

The viewing environment matters just as much as the monitor itself. Ambient lighting affects color perception more than most people expect. Even professional colorists work in controlled lighting conditions.
